Singapore Children in California

In Singapore, children are raising academically, bilingual. Due to work, we had to reside in California, USA. That means that my children have to continue their education in California.

We have been pondering if the children have to separate from their dad who is working in USA. Finally, we decided united as a one. This will be a great challenge for my kids and me. The first challenge is - there is no second language in school. Second - Math is straightforward and minimum thinking question. Third - Subject like Science, History, and Geography are teaching at the stage of kindergarten.

The plus is my children come to the new environment California during the beginning stage that is Kindergarten. Moreover, they had experience the school life back in Singapore. They had started going to Childcare Center/Pre-school at the age of 18 months. As a result, when they enter the kindergarten, the school had suggested they jump to 1^st grade instead as they are far ahead the rest of the children. Due to the difference in the culture, we started them off according to their age and prefer them to get use the new environment and education system.

On the other hand, we have to adhere to Singapore education syllabus. Therefore, we had brought the entire textbook from Singapore. Moreover, we teach them Singapore syllabus beside those they learnt in school.

As both of us are working, we put them to a private school after their morning elementary school. The private school will provide them Chinese lesson daily. Beside Chinese, they will learn advance English, Math, and Science. These will definitely an asset to the children to allow them to excel in school.

Summer holiday June 2009, we had returned to Singapore for 2 weeks to visit my parent. The children had visited their school in Singapore. However, it is during the school holiday, the school officer offer to provide us a tour and introduce us the school compound. The building structure, school timetable and the canteen impress them. They are surprise that the Extra-Curriculum Activities are provides to the student at no cost! Here in California, we have to pay US$10/30mins for the table tennis lesson!

Now, back in California due to our work, the boys had return to the life here. We need to spend more money if the children want to take extra-curriculum activities after school. Thus, we had learnt over here, teach your children if you have the knowledge yourself, and groom them if you have extra cash!
